As one of the early luxury brands, CELINE has gone through different stages in its history to become the icon it is today. Its origins as a children's shoe brand in 1945 seem to belong to another world. CELINE has positioned itself as a reference point for young fashion today. Under the creative direction of Hedi Slimane for both men and women, and under the corporate leadership of Séverine Merle, the brand has undergone transformation and resurgence.

Let us tell you some details about the history of CELINE clothing in this new entry:

1960-1987: the dawn of CELINE clothing

The 1960s fashion boom in France witnessed the rise of many of the great designers we celebrate today. From Yves Saint Laurent to Hubert de Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, and now Céline Vipiana (founder of CELINE along with her husband, Richard).

The first 15 years of the brand focused on children's accessory collections until the 1960s when the new wave of ready-to-wear luxury fashion inspired the brand to venture into everyday clothing. Their collections featured sporty touches, inspired by sports that were typically fashionable, such as tennis. This reference can still be seen in their shows and campaigns today.

The 1970s saw its global expansion, now with a new logo distinct from the original red elephant. This logo continues to evolve and is represented by the intertwined double C with the Arc de Triomphe as a union between them (known as CELINE Triomphe). This symbol, which adorns many CELINE accessories and bags, represents the elegant soul of Parisians. In the same decade, the founder established a sponsorship with the American Hospital of Paris as a symbol of her charitable spirit.

1987-2008: a new global power

During this period, CELINE clothing was acquired by the LVMH group, officially becoming a part of it in 1996. The new funding brought exponential growth and popularity among the French. In 1997, after Peggy Huynh Kinh's succession of Vipiana, Michael Kors took creative control of the house. This era of CELINE is known for its ultra-sporty and sexy style, with muses like Gisele Bundchen and the wave of Brazilian models becoming the new faces of the brand.

From 2004 to 2008, two other designers attempted to revive the house but didn't achieve the expected success. It was during this time that the era of Phoebe Philo began.

2008-2018: the most conceptual CELINE clothing

It's hard to forget the CELINE campaigns featuring Daria Werbowy as the main muse of the house. This was a cult era for the brand, where its position became firmly associated with the new concept of fashion design. Phoebe Philo's influence on CELINE can still be felt in many of the current creations, having nurtured talented designers who are now recognized in their own right.

2018-Present: a brand at fashion’s Olympus

The brand's clear and successful repositioning is undeniable. Under the creative leadership of Hedi Slimane, formerly at Saint Laurent, the brand has risen even higher, attaining a new status in the industry and pop culture. Its dark, rock 'n' roll-inspired, and youthful aesthetic is now associated with the new wave of celebrities and global stars. Among the younger generation, the brand has become a key style reference. Alongside the revived CELINE aesthetic, which incorporates many of its initial sporty elements, the brand launches timeless pieces that are favourites among customers every season.

From CELINE sandals, bags, and baskets to CELINE sunglasses... The brand has achieved what few brands do: a 360-degree positioning in all the important fronts of fashion. Its ambassadors, from Lisa (Blackpink) to Kaia Gerber, represent a whole new generation connected to the current pop culture.
