Fashion & Film (I): Top Five Films for Fashion Enthusiasts

Lights, camera, fashion!

It’s the perfect time for a cosy evening at home. And for those who want to make the most of staying home, we have some iconic film ideas to share with you. As you hug your Burberry cushion sitting under your heartwarming Loewe blanket, sipping straight from your DoubleJ mug, these fashion films might just be your perfect weekend pastime. For those like us captivated by the allure of couture, there's nothing quite like immersing oneself in the world of fashion through the lens of cinema. From historic designs to captivating narratives, these movies offer a glimpse into the glamorous, and sometimes cutthroat, realm of high fashion.

Below are the top five must-watch movies for fashion industry lovers:

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

We had to kickstart this list with a timeless classic in the fashion film canon. "The Devil Wears Prada'’ takes viewers behind the scenes of the prestigious fashion magazine, Runway (mirroring Vogue), and into the high-pressure world of high fashion.

The film is an adaptation from Lauren Weisberger's homonymous novel, following Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, as she navigates the demands of her formidable boss, Miranda Priestly, portrayed by Meryl Streep. With its sharp wit, dazzling wardrobe, and insight into the inner workings of the industry, "The Devil Wears Prada" remains a must-watch for fashion enthusiasts.

Saint Laurent (2014)

Monsieur Saint Laurent was an intriguing figure in fashion with an intense life in the Parisian night scene. This film by Bertrand Bonello allows us to step into the world of one of fashion's most iconic figures.

This biographical drama chronicles, in a very profound and personal manner, the life and career of the legendary French designer between 1967 and 1976, which were his peak career years. Through stunning cinematography and the classic French meticulous attention to detail, the film captures the essence of Saint Laurent's groundbreaking designs and the turbulent personal journey behind them in a sort of demi-documentary film.

House of Gucci (2021)

One of the most talked about movies of the new decade, the film features an all-star cast led by Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. "House of Gucci" offers a gripping portrayal of misadventures behind the iconic Italian fashion empire exactly one century after its foundation.

Based on true events, always with the mandatory filmographic enhancements and licences, the film delves into the power struggles, betrayals, and intrigues that rocked the Gucci family dynasty. Opulent costumes, compelling narrative and a consistent Italian flavour of life, "House of Gucci" serves up a tantalising blend of high fashion and drama.

Cristóbal Balenciaga (2024)

The new Disney+ show retells the life of Cristóbal Balenciaga in Paris. Told through a series of flashbacks of the designer during a lengthy interview, it delves into his personal and professional challenges, and we can see the intricacies of what it was like to run a haute couture house in the 20th century.

The series consists of six episodes of approximately one hour each, tracing Balenciaga's journey to find his place in the Parisian couture scene. We meet his drive and creative eye, surrounded by key figures unknown to many such as Wladzio D’Atainville (his partner and associate) or Nicolás Bizcarrondo (the first investor of the Balenciaga house, a refugee in France from the Spanish Civil War, along with his wife Virgilia).

Coco Before Chanel (2009)

Back to a more historiographic approach, this film explores the early life and career of fashion icon Coco Chanel. Starring Audrey Tautou in the titular role, the film traces Chanel's journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most influential figures in 20th-century fashion.

The film captures the celebrated essence of the womenswear designer, the very first to add chains on shoulder bags and even to the bottom of her jackets to allow a more controlled fall and fit. From revolutionary designs freeing women of corsets and uncomfortable attire, to her unconventional personal approach to life, "Coco Before Chanel" offers a fascinating glimpse into the woman behind a legendary brand.

These films offer just the perfect blend of fashion, intrigue, and inspiration for us fashion enthusiasts. This week, remember to book a slot in your calendar to sit back and embrace the sartorial glamour of cinematic fashion.
