Loewe, Between Craftsmanship and Contemporaneity
From its origin, Loewe’s identity has been linked to artisan tradition. Founded by a group of leather specialists in 1848, the experience transmitted over more than 170 years is the living soul of the Spanish house.
Pieces designed by Shizu Okino using traditional Japanese braiding techniques
By approaching this legacy from a contemporary perspective, Irish designer Jonathan Anderson - who was appointed as Loewe’s Creative Director in 2013 - has brought traditional techniques into a dialogue with new technologies, exploring the combination of forms and materials to define the current relationship between fashion and art.
As a new project to enhance this close relationship, the Spanish house brought together in Milan an extraordinary selection of artists who were invited to work in a new medium: leather. Through different techniques, these masters of crafts produced a series of exclusive objects for the exhibition.
Loewe Gate and Bucket bags in braided leather
Along with artists like Shizu Okino, Joe Hogan or Deloss Webber, Anderson and Loewe brought together some of the in-house artisans to re-imagine icons such as the Gate and Puzzle bags, using a rich variety of leather weaving and basketry techniques.
This fantastic project recalls the company's commitment and passion for craftsmanship and the modernity, two central ideas in both its ready-to-wear collections and its family of accessories.
