TOP FALL 2024 FASHION TRENDS
With summer's end just a month away, our stores are already flooded with fall’s fashion offerings. A decade ago, trend hunters and fashion magazines were the first to announce upcoming trends. Nowadays, social media and software like LYST or @databutmakeitfashion can give us a sneak peek of what's coming.
Generally speaking, the tug-of-war between Y2K maximalism and 90s minimalism remains strong. While brands like The Row and TOTEME lean towards simplicity in their designs, Miu Miu and Loewe dive into maximalism with their own personal touches. This dynamic leaves the audience eager for more.
With the arrival of new collections, what can we anticipate for Fall 2024 trends?
The Reign of Chocolate Brown
True to @databutmakeitfashion's prediction, chocolate brown seems to be the standout colour for this fall. Gaining traction since spring, this shade has defined collections from Miu Miu, Tibi, Atlein, and Saint Laurent.
This neutral tone can be seen in bags like Jacquemus' Bambino bag or Chloé's new silhouettes. The presence of this warm brown is extensive, evoking the feeling of hot chocolate, falling leaves, cosy wood interiors, and everything we love about autumn.
Ruffles and Lace
If one brand dominated the film awards season, it was Chloé by Chemena Kamali. And if there was one defining silhouette, it was ruffles. With an unmatched flair, and championed by Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, and Greta Gerwig at the Met Gala, Chemena Kamali's essence is here to stay.
The most anticipated debut of last season captured the fashion world's heart with its romanticism and nostalgia. If anything seems to be intoxicating fashion this decade, it's nostalgia. Chemena knows what she's doing.
The second season of Gucci under Sabato de Sarno also traded sequins for lace and sheer fabrics. In brown and olive tones, his new collection solidified an aesthetic wave alongside the latest collection from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.
The result is clear: sheer fabrics and lace are IN.
Soft Loafers and Ballet Flats
It seems the reign of chunky shoes is taking a break. With a considerable rise in popularity since Miu Miu's revival in 2021, lightweight silhouettes have become a wardrobe essential. Starting with ballet flats.
Miu Miu ballet flats sparked the return of light footwear. Their silhouettes are flexible and relaxed, similar to ballet slippers. The comeback of comfort also brought attention back to loafers like Gucci Horsebit loafers or The Row Colette loafers. These lightweight and flexible models, including Tod's Gommino, have slowly found their place in various aesthetics.
From 1950s style to the bohemian revival, flexible footwear has been at the forefront of trendy style for the past three years.
Jet Black
The colour that (rarely) goes out of style. Since Pierpaolo's farewell collection for Valentino, black in its monochromatic form has made a strong comeback. The Row, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, and Chloé have confirmed the suspicions: black remains at the centre of all fashion colours.
Valentino collection explored the multidimensionality of the colour. Its presence in other collections confirms its status as a colour that never seems to fade. Its elegance, sobriety, and endless combinatorial possibilities make it a winner. And as Pierpaolo said, it’s far from being a flat colour.
Vintage and the 1950s
Golden Goose understood it from the start: vintage is in. And in this nostalgic phase of fashion, worn, aged-effect clothing has returned to the forefront. Don’t believe it? Just ask about the impeccably hand-aged monk shoes from Church’s x Miu Miu. Or the jackets from Prada new clothing collection, a true dialogue between modernity and the past. What’s interesting about this trend is that it’s not about copying the past, but about mixing the old with the new, telling stories.
The silhouettes from Atlein, Self-Portrait, and Valentino suggest that the 1950s are back to take over. Known for its heightened femininity, this decade is once again a point of reference for contemporary fashion. But not without reinterpreting its shapes for the new generation. Full skirts, cinched waists, and defined shoulders set the trend.
This balance between glamour and normalcy perfectly reflects the duality of current fashion. Now, the everyday can be as inspiring as the extraordinary, and everyone can choose the path that resonates most with them.
