February is one short month, but with plenty to offer. The briefest of the twelve, but filled with items and celebrations. Coming from februus in Latin (along the lines of “month of purification”). Certainly, February marks the beginning of a lot of occurrences. Some of us will choose to participate in, or not, on Valentine’s Day. Both if you do like it or if you stay away from such mainstream campaigns, it’s true that February is full of love for several things. In our industry, it reminds us of the love for our craft in all its senses by celebrating international Fashion Weeks.
Although the fashion show calendar differs from that of a decade ago, with social media and the relocation of many labels, February continues to be a month of love and fashion. But, what should we keep our eye on for this month?
London Fashion Week (17th to 21st of February)
On Monday, February 20th we’ll assist to the arrival of the new Burberry by Daniel Lee. After his unstoppable success in Bottega Veneta, the English mastermind returns after a year of silence. This time, taking the reigns of Burberry during London Fashion Week. Since his appointment last autumn, we’ve learned that he’s allegedly under the wing of Christopher Bailey (former Creative Director of Burberry until 2015).
We can expect an entire revision of the Burberry classics, these being the trench coat, the Check print and the English night. The brand has been exceptional since its dawn, and a symbol of English identity. It now prepares to begin a new chapter. As with other projects with his involvement, Burberry’s social media channels have undergone a complete erasure of content, preparing the canvas for Daniel Lee’s new creation.
Milan Fashion Week (21st to 27th of February)
Following the new path began by Marco de Vincenzo’s debut last season, Etro will be a safe bet amongst our brands. His new reinterpretation of the nomadic spirit as one travelling between dreams will continue to be the talk of the town.
Prada will likely live through a new twist. After the closing of his eponymous brand, Raf Simons is said to be 100% involved in every move of the Italian house. Its influence has already been seen in his penchant for the ethereal and Americana fashion. What can we expect not from the creative duo?
During this same week, we can’t miss presentations by Tod’s, Bottega Veneta, Jil Sander and Gucci. The latter will have to wait until September for the debut of their new Creative Director, Sábato de Sarno. We can expect a runway show reinvigorating classics in exquisite quality, donned by the in-house Gucci design team. Perhaps, surprises may happen.
Paris Fashion Week (27th of February to the 7th of March)
On top of our participating brands, our sights are set on two special debuts this week during Paris Fashion Week shows: Harris Reed for Nina Ricci, and Ludovic de Saint Sernin for Ann Demeulemeester. They both follow in the steps of highly regarded geniuses: Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh, y Ann Demeulemeester respectively.
Overlapping with March, February is a month of love and fashion. The great fashion houses go back to square one, as it happens every six months. Despite the concepts of season, gender and collection getting more and more blurry with time; the rise of menswear and the intersectionality of womenswear continue being the centre of attention twice a year: in September, and in February.
